As indicated in Figure 1, patient visitsfor “hypertensive disease (hypertension and hypertensive heart disease) increased during the 1970s until 1976, when it began to decline and followed the national decreasing trend for all visits to physicians. But from 1970 to 1982, visits to physicians for hypertension increased almost 55 percent, whereas visits for all causes remained relatively stable.
